Skype, the makers of the wildly popular telephony service that allows users to make free skype to skype phone calls all around the world have updated their iphone app.
This is a significant upgrade taking advantage of the multitasking features (3GS and iphone 4 only) new to iPhone iOS4.
Prior to this version incoming skype calls to the iPhone could only be made when the application was running in the foreground. With the updated version skype can now receive incoming calls when the user is in any app and even when the phone is in standby. This suddenly makes the phone incredibly more useful. Now any user, anywhere in the world can skype you directly to your phone or desktop/laptop free of charge.
I tested this feature with my son and the call quality was quite good. Incoming calls made the standby phone ring with a message alerting the user to an incoming skype calls.
For those who make frequent international calls this could be a game changer. Along with Pandora this makes bet use of the multitasking capabilities of iOS4.
